The biodiversity inventory of the 400 hectare private Natural Reserve: Río Escondido in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, with the purpose to stimulate the ecotourism was finalized late 2011. An illustrated Field Guide for the identified plants was published as an E-book in July 2012 and a download link is available in the download section of this webpage.

The biodiversity inventory of the Mombacho Volcano National Park in Nicaragua was finalized in July 2012. An illustrated Field Guide for the identified plants is prenently in the process of being published as an E-book. A download link will soon be available from this webpage.

International Training Programs

Learning is a progressive and continuous process. Asserbo Consulting S.A. is specialized in planning, preparing and conducting training programs, courses, seminars and study tours on a wide range of topics.

Our training programs are bi-directional and can be based on student exchange solutions. This means that our vision is that both students from developing countries should have access to quality courses on for example Environment and Environmental Business held in Europe (EU) and United States (U.S.A.) as well as students from EU and U.S.A. should have access to quality courses on Environment and Environmental Business held in developing countries.

We believe bi-directional learning is important for the development of students prepared for globalization and professional intercultural networking. At present Asserbo Consulting S.A. is organizing courses on the subject: Building Biodiversity Business in Nicaragua. Shortly, more information will follow on this page.

Building Biodiversity Business

Asserbo Consulting S.A. helps setting up your small business based on Ecosystems and Biodiversity. With a little ingenuity and some concrete knowledge on the local ecosystems and biodiversity, a compelling business case can be constructed for environmental protection and improvement. The business can be privately owned or developed for local communities.

We can help you with defining the products you could offer, making market analysis, developing brochures and catalogs, organizing your business, developing your investment plans, and helping you with the necessary advertisements.

The challenge of building biodiversity business is not trivial. There is a need to develop new business models and market mechanisms for biodiversity conservation, while also raising awareness and persuading the public and policy-makers that biodiversity (or component ecosystem services) can be conserved on a commercial basis.

Environmental Assessment

Asserbo Consulting S.A. offer as one of our key-services assessments of the possible positive and/or negative impacts that a proposed projects may have on the environment, together consisting of the environmental, social and economic aspects. We identify, predict, evaluate and design mitigation measures for the biophysical, social, and other relevant effects of development proposals prior to major decisions being taken and commitments made.

We and our staff have many years of experiences with road- and infrastructure development projects. Among our methods and tools are: focal group consultations, GIS mapping based on participatory techniques, photographic survey and documentation, and multidiscplinary approaches.

Adaptation to Climate Change

Asserbo Consulting S.A. has experience with the vulnerability to natural climate variability or to human-induced climate change reflects its degree of exposure and its capacity to adapt. Exposure to climate-related risks has risen dramatically in recent decades, and we consider the integration of this issue a "must" for almost any of our development projects. Presently, Asserbo Consulting S.A. is focused on four (4) areas of adaptation to climate change:

  1. Climate change affects coastal areas in several ways. Coasts are sensitive to sea level rise, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms, increases in precipitation, and warmer ocean temperatures.
  2. Climate affects ecosystems. Warmer climate can force species to migrate to higher latitudes or higher elevations where temperatures are more conducive to their survival. Similarly, as sea level rises, saltwater intrusion into a freshwater system can force some key species to relocate or die, which can cause an adverse impact all the way down the food chain.
  3. Forests are vulnerable to increased frequency of forest fires, and air pollution.
  4. Transportation systems are designed to withstand "typical" weather and climate. Transportation engineers typically refer to historical records of climate, especially extreme weather events, when designing transportation systems. However, due to climate change, historical climate is no longer a reliable predictor of future impacts.

Climate Change

Our staff has experience in working with significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to hundreds of years from the Arctic and the Tropical Regions. This includes the work with statistical significative climate data, elaboration of hydrological balance, the use of soil sampling, pollen analysis, and the study of ice crystals.

Reducing your Environmental Footprint

Asserbo Consulting S.A. helps companies and municipalities enhancing their performance through higher resource efficiency and a lower environmental and carbon footprint. This includes transportation and energy efficiency, waste generation and recycling, product consumption, and development of best practices. Reducing the environmental footprint is a short-term investment resulting in savings and greening the image of your business.

Rapid Biodiversity Assessment

Asserbo Consulting S.A. is experienced in the planning and conduction of Rapid Biodiversity Assessments and we are linked-up with some of the Region's most qualified biodiversity experts to offer the best cover of all plant and animal groups. Furthermore, we are working in cooperation with important museums of natural history worldwide to secure, that our findings are transparent and well documented. Rapid biodiversity assessment is a method of quickly collecting information on the species present in a given area.

Rapid biodiversity assessment differs from other biodiversity assessment approaches because it is done quickly, often with the aim of providing information to guide conservation action. Conservation decision-making is usually done on a time frame that is much more urgent that many scientific studies and thus data needed to inform these decisions must be made available as quickly as possible. Our services within Rapid Biodiversity Assessment are also used to document base line studies included in Management Plans for Environmental Assessments and for the development of local Eco-Tourism Projects.
